You will notice slight chipping on the edges of the bone as your pooch gets deeper into the marrow. That is normal for these bones. If you have a super aggressive chewer, and see large pieces an inch in size missing, take the bone away. Your dog has graduated to an aggressive chewer and should be presented a shin bone in it's place.
